چکیده

By extrapolating to O/H = N/H = 0 the empirical correlations Y –O/H and Y –N/H defined by a relatively large sample of ∼ 45 Blue Compact Dwarfs (BCDs), we have obtained a primordial Helium mass fraction Yp= 0.2443±0.0015 with dY /dZ = 2.4±1.0. This result is in excellent agreement with the average Yp= 0.2452±0.0015 determined in the two most metal-deficient BCDs known, I Zw 18 (Z⊙/50) and SBS 0335–052 (Z⊙/41), where the correction for He production is smallest. The quoted error (1σ) of ∼ < 1% is statistical and does not include systematic effects. We examine various systematic effects including collisional excitation of Hydrogen lines, ionization structure and temperature fluctuation effects, and underlying stellar He I absorption, and conclude that combining all systematic effects, our Yp may be underestimated by ∼ 2–4%. Taken at face value, our Yp implies a baryon-to-photon number ratio η = (4.7 −0.8)×10 −10 and a baryon mass fraction Ωbh100 = 0.017±0.005 (2σ), consistent with the values obtained from deuterium and Cosmic Microwave Background measurements. Correcting Yp upward by 2–4% would make the agreement even better.

A Realistic Determination of the Error on the Primordial Helium Abundance: Steps Toward Non-Parametric Nebular Helium Abundances

UMN-TH-2311/04 FTPI-MINN-04/22 astro-ph/0405588 June 2004 Using the WMAP determination of the baryon density, the standard model of big bang nucleosynthesis yields relatively precise predictions of the primordial light element abundances. Currently there are two significantly different observational determinations of the primordial helium abundance, and, if only statistical errors in He abundan...

Systematic uncertainties in the determination of the primordial 4 He abundance

The primordial helium abundance Yp is commonly inferred from abundance determinations in lowmetallicity extragalactic H ii-regions. Such determinations may be subject to systematic uncertainties that are investigated here. Particular attention is paid to two effects: icf -corrections for “imperfect” ionization structure leading to significant amounts of (unobservable) neutral helium or hydrogen...

The primordial abundance of He: a self-consistent empirical analysis of systematic effects in a large sample of low-metallicity H ii regions

We determine the primordial helium mass fraction Yp using 93 spectra of 86 low-metallicity extragalactic H ii regions. This sample constitutes the largest and most homogeneous high-quality data sets in existence for the determination of Yp. For comparison and to improve the statistics in our investigation of systematic effects affecting the Yp determination, we have also considered a sample of ...

Collisional excitation of hydrogen and the determination of the primordial helium abundance from H ii regions

This paper investigates the effect of collisional enhancement of the hydrogen lines on the derivation of the helium abundances in low metallicity H ii regions. For this, we have constructed a grid of photoionization models relevant for the analysis of giant H ii regions in blue compact galaxies. We show that the effect of collisional excitation on the Hα/Hβ ratio can be quite important (up to 8...

Photoionization Models of Metal-poor Extragalactic H Ii Regions and the Primordial Helium Abundance

We discuss the effects of collisional enhancement of Balmer lines on the determination of the primordial helium abundance. To this aim, we present a photoionization model of the metal-poor extragalactic H II region SBS 0335–052. We show that the derived helium abundance (Y ) of this H II region depends on the amount of collisional excitation affecting the Balmer lines, both directly (through an...
